We Support the Storey Arms Centre with finance and resources
What We Do
- We Hold Funds
The Friends of Storey Arms holds donations from interested organisations and individuals, together with money raised through our events.
For many years, the Storey Arms Centre was awarded funds by an Educational Trust to help assist pupils from the more deprived areas of Cardiff. By subsidising the participant cost to a school, this allowed all the pupils in a class to benefit, and to enjoy the opportunities that the Storey Arms Centre provides.
Hundreds, if not thousands, of children were supported over the years, so when the Educational Trust decided to close in 2010, it awarded the Friends of Storey Arms funds to continue support for the centre. We are still distributing these funds whilst adding more through our own events.
- We Raise Money
We hold events to raise funds to support our work.
Past events include:
- Curry Nights at Cardiff restaurants
- Pop-up Evening Meal at the Storey Arms Centre with The Tidy Kitchen
With our partner Cardiff North Tae Kwondo School we have held:
- a Skittles Night
- a Mountain Triathlon
Through the Storey Arms Centre shop, we sell printed neck scarves. Always very popular, they have become like a badge of honour and we have raised a lot of funds through their sale.
We can also apply for grants from other organisations.
- We Help
We provide financial assistance for pupils and/or cover transport costs, enabling more young people to enjoy the benefits of a visit to the Storey Arms Centre.
We would all love to have outdoor adventurous activities as part of the statutory education provision, particularly for primary aged children. However, there is a cost to providing high quality outdoor experiences and schools need to charge parents/guardians for day visits and residentials.
By targeting schools through recognised channels in relation to social deprivation, we offer a subsidy to all pupils attending a programme at the Storey Arms. Depending on the type of visit the subsidy will be:
- a per head reduction in the course fee (depending on length of programme)
- a reduction in a fixed course fee (for a group)
- a contribution towards minibus transport to/from the centre
In many cases, the cost of transport can be a make or break decision on whether a school can visit.
We are also able to help specific individuals, usually through the request of their teachers or youth workers.

- We Provide
We use our funds to improve the opportunities for all visitors to the Storey Arms Centre, through providing resources and additional support to the centre.
The primary focus for the Head of Centre at the Storey Arms Centre is to provide the best service to the young people visiting the centre. This costs money and all the income from course fees is used to cover the day-to-day running costs of the centre.
However, there are times where some extra income would be helpful in purchasing something that would be really useful, but not necessarily essential. This is where we come in!
By raising money, we can help purchase those things on the centre’s “wish list”.
Some of the things that we have helped with:
- Large flatscreen TV for the Lolfa (common room)
- Landscaping costs
- IT equipment
- Pictures around the building
These resources are enjoyed by all visitors to the Storey Arms Centre, helping it to be the thriving and cherished outdoor centre that it is.
- We Have Fun
We act as a social focal point for those who have an interest in the Storey Arms Centre. We hold social events such as Family Weekends and meals out, where fund raising takes a back seat!
Since the pandemic, everyone seems to be busier than ever. Time for partying needs time to organise and we would love more people to get involved in getting everyone together.
We have a few ideas up our sleeves, but please get in touch if you want to help out!

We are always looking for new supporters and anyone who is interested in helping out on any of our events or becoming more involved as a committee member. Everyone is welcome!

Join the Committee!
The Friends of Storey Arms is governed by our Trustees but not all of them have the time to take an active role in organising fundraising events or social get-togethers.
They need the support of volunteers who maybe have a little more spare time and specialist skills to make sure that the charity runs smoothly and continues to grow.

Are you looking for a local charity to support as part of your corporate community involvement?
Although the Storey Arms Centre is based in Powys, it is owned by Cardiff Council and serves the young people of Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan. Chances are, you or someone you know has visited the centre in the past and – hopefully – has fond memories of it!
